The Carbon Trust will be using it’s vast knowledge and experience to help Brazil manage its electricity during the 2016 Olympic games in Rio, Brazil. They will be holding a series of workshops in the UK’s capital city London for technicians and planners from the brazilian firm ONS (National Electric Systems Operator). In these workshops the brazilian team will be showed how to make sure Rio is prepared for electricity surges during the games and what effect this had on London.
The hope is that these workshops will allow Rio to be free some any sort of blackout during the Olympic games. The knowledge that the Carbon Trust gained during the 2012 London Olympic Games will give the brazilian energy technicians an insight of what will happen during the games, how to avoid potential problems and what to do if a problem arises.
Research that the Carbon Trust made during the 2012 Olympic Games shows that there was a massive variation in energy usage during the Olympic Games, we saw spikes in energy useage of up to 6GW in a time space of less than 10 minutes. This amount of electricity can be compared to 6 nuclear power stations or twice the average electricity demand of Rio de Janeiro on a day to day basis.
The Manager of Real Time Operation at ONS has welcomed the news that the Carbon Trust will be helping them to make sure there is no problems during the upcoming Olympic Games. It will help them to ensure the games go smoothly and sort out any opportunity for improvement before the games start.
The help made by the UK’s Carbon Trust is not just for the Olympics it will also ensure the World Cup in 2014 that is also being help in Brazil will go smoothly without and problems with energy. Brazil are looking to maintain the highest degree of energy reliability throughout the World Cup and the Olympic Games. The Carbon Trust is hoping that this is the first of many project that the UK and Brazil can work on together.
This project to make sure that the games go smoothly is being funded by the British Embassy Brasilia and will carry on throughout this year and next year.
