Whether you are running a business or are a domestic consumer, being more energy efficient and ‘green’ can offer you the opportunity to shrink your monthly or quarterly bills whilst also helping to produce less carbon monoxide which is harmful to the planet.
With simple ways to make changes, you can start being more energy efficient straight away:
- In winter, use draft proofing techniques around doors and windows to help keep heat in meaning you use less energy to keep the room warm.
- Check the minimum temperature your workplace can be set at so that you are not paying a higher charge than necessary. At home, turn the thermostat down by one degree.
- Turn the heating off at night and when no one is there.
- Power down computers at night and turn off TV’s. Standby uses nearly as much power as it being on.
- When you are making a cup of tea or coffee, fill the kettle only enough for what you need. People waste so much money by overfilling and using excess energy to heat the unwanted water.
- If there is a room which is used less, either at home or the workplace (e.g a stock room), turn off the radiator.
- Start using energy efficient light bulbs. They use 80% less energy than regular bulbs and last fifteen times longer.
- When you leave a room, turn off the lights.
- At home: use the dishwasher at 30 degrees and try to hang your clothes to dry after to use the energy-heavy tumble dryer less.
- At work: use reminders around the office to encourage your employees to follow energy efficient actions such as Power Down stickers on computers & Turn Off memo’s on the lights.
These are some really simple ways to start making a difference. If you want to take it a step further and really take a look at your energy efficiency then here are a few extra ways to be more ‘green’.
-If you have a boiler with a tank either in an airing cupboard or loft then you may waste a lot of money on the heat which escapes it. By fitting it with a tank jacket you waste less heat and save money.
-Find a new energy tariff which uses renewable energy such as hydro power or solar power, otherwise known as a ‘green tariff’.
-Double glaze your windows. This can be a big job but you will shocked at the difference it makes to how much energy you use and how much warmer your home is minus that draft!
